Tasting Notes

With its deeper ruby garnet hue, this wine offers a beautifully lifted nose of red cherry and delicate rose petal, grounded by turned earth and a whisper of baking spice. The palate opens with a supple, rounded entry, unfolding into layers of darker red fruits of black plum and cherry, interwoven with a savory volcanic minerality. A note of oolong tea adds intrigue and a subtle, earthy elegance. Medium in length with a persistent finish, the wine shows youthful tension and refinement, suggesting it is still on its upward trajectory and will continue to evolve gracefully in the cellar.

Laniger Vineyard

Laniger Vineyard is located on an opposing bench slope adjacent from our acclaimed Deer Camp Vineyard, on the western edge of Grace Benoist Ranch. Here, the soils are very well-drained alluvial Laniger loam, a fine, sandy volcanic loam with medium acidity levels, a result of the Rodgers Creek Fault line which runs near the vineyard. Laniger is protected from the Petaluma Gap’s cooling effect, but still benefits from proximity to San Pablo Bay, where fog forms early and recedes late in the day. The gradual slope here and moderate microclimate allow for even vine growth and ideal fruit ripening

vintage

In 2023, Grace Benoist Ranch, situated in the cool, maritime-swept Carneros region of Sonoma, benefited from a classic growing season defined by moderation and persistence. A wet and cool winter segued into a foggy "June gloom," delaying bud break and pushing veraison late into the season. Throughout summer, temperatures remained mild, with daytime highs generally between the low to mid-70°F range, which allowed fruit to ripen evenly and maintain vibrant natural acidity. Harvest was unusually late; this extended hang time permitted development of excellent flavor and structural depth without loss of finesse. The resulting wines display hallmark traits of Grace Benoist Ranch: clarity of fruit, refined minerality and bright acidity. Age-worthy, they are beautifully balanced - structured yet elegant - with vivid aromatics that reflect the cool-climate precision of this remarkable 2023 vintage.

Crafted Excellence

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine were harvested at night to preserve freshness and integrity. They were placed in open-top fermenters for 3-5 days of cold maceration followed by fermentation. Punch downs were performed during the early stages of fermentation with the extraction becoming gentler as the wine became dry. A quiet extended maceration followed, helping to enhance the richness and mouthfeel of the wine. The wine was lightly pressed into French oak barrels (25% new) where it rested for 14 months. The wine was bottled with no fining or filtration and allowed to rest for another eight months prior to release.
