Our 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a beautiful, deep mauve hue in the glass. The nose is expressive and generous, with a cherry-vanilla lift, hints of cola, and blackberry pie accented by graham cracker spice. Layers of red currant, raspberry preserves, and acai berry are joined by subtle earthy tones. The palate is full and rich, yet very balanced, driven by plush red raspberries and cherries throughout, alongside dark cherry fruit and a creamy, rounded mid-palate mouthfeel. Natural acidity gives the wine freshness while tannins feel soft, finely integrated, and approachable—succulent, supple, and drinking well immediately upon release. The finish is tactile and gently firm, turning drier with notes of bittersweet chocolate, espresso bean, and a hint of truffle-like earthiness. Secondary accents of red rose petal and wild thyme linger. A classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with spice-and-earth complexity, nice weight, and plenty of early-drinking appeal.

The Vineyard

The Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted with grapes from unique benchland vineyards representing the major sub-appellations of Napa Valley. The 2022 Cabernet was sourced with fruit from some of the most highly regarded winegrowers in Napa Valley — Vine Hill Ranch, Borrow Pit Vineyard on Gamble Ranch in Oakville and Meteor Vineyard in Coombsville. By deliberately sourcing fruit from this group of exemplary vineyards, this wine exhibits the full potential of what Cabernet Sauvignon can show, in its flavors and textures, with vitality and finesse.

Process

  • A near ideal vintage, 2022 produced exceptionally high-quality fruit. Winter began with ample rains and led to cool weather patterns during flowering, which supported naturally limited vine yields. A mild summer set the stage for even ripening, with veraison appearing in early July. A cool, maritime-influenced August supported a foundation of bright, natural acidity and slow maturity, resulting in beautifully complex flavors and aromas. Picking prior to a Labor Day heat event allowed the fruit to retain the wine’s alluring and fresh characteristics.

Crafted Excellence

Winemaking

Etude’s philosophy remains steadfast, and this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is no exception as this wine was crafted with very minimal winemaking intervention. The grapes were cold soaked for 3-5 days and fermented on their skins in open top fermenters. An extended maceration period followed fermentation to help modify the depth and mouthfeel of the wine, and to fully extract color, flavor, and aromatics. The young wine was then racked into small French oak barrels – using a selection of coopers and forests to accentuate the vineyard distinctions – where it aged for 20 months in 100% French Oak (75% new). To maintain the unique characteristics of each vineyard, each block and lot was kept separate until final blending.
