Vintage 2014

The Etude Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from our estate vineyard at Grace Benoist Ranch, which is located in the northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Our Chardonnay vineyards have deep, well-drained cobbly clay loam soils, perfect for growing grapes of exceptional expression. The cooler maritime temperatures at Grace Benoist Ranch provide for a long and even growing season, allowing the fruit to fully ripen in harmony with the vines’ physiological development.

“Subtle aromas of sliced apple, oyster shell and lemon rind. Full body, good fruit and an almond and green apple aftertaste. Drink now.” - James Suckling, May 2017

Tasting Notes

A pure, distinguished Chardonnay, this is rich and concentrated, yet elegantly vibrant. On the palate, our Estate Grown Chardonnay offers lemon curd, Bartlett pear, apple and citrus, but the fruit is balanced with acidity and citrus blossom notes, letting this wine be a versatile companion to food. The notable concentration of fruit comes from the low yielding selections and a subtle sur lie note adds nuance and depth.

Vineyard Notes

The Grace Benoist Estate vineyard is farmed to Etude’s exacting standards, using environmentally sound viticultural practices. We grow and ultimately harvest focusing on intensity of flavor, strong varietal delineation and ideal natural balance.

Vintage Notes

Despite drought conditions, the 2014 vintage proved to be ideal, with excellent quality reminiscent of 2012 and 2013. The winter was one of the driest on record in California, but substantial rains in early spring were timely and set up the vines for a strong start. Summer temperatures were milder than expected with no extremes, and after early bud break and veraison, harvest was unusually early.

Winemaking Notes

The fruit for our Carneros Estate Chardonnay was harvested at night and gently whole-cluster pressed before being transferred to neutral French oak barrels for fermentation.  The wine was bottled after 11 months of maturation, with a weekly stirring of the yeast lees for the initial two months of aging to enhance aromatics and increase mid-palate weight. Our Chardonnay is crafted to showcase the unique terroir of Grace Benoist Ranch and did not go through malolactic fermentation in order to highlight the natural acidity and beauty of the Chardonnay grape.
