94 Points - Vinous

"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville emerges from a parcel in the famed Vine Hill Ranch. Powerful and structured, but with less of the opulence of the other wines in the range, the 2012 is going to need a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Graphite, smoke, crushed flower and red stone fruits are laced into the finish. There is a real sense of power and gravitas that runs through the 2012." - Antonio Galloni, October 2015

93 Points - Wine Advocate

"A big, muscular, Pauillac-like effort, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville exhibits copious aromas of forest floor, unsmoked, high-quality cigar tobacco, crème de cassis, licorice and cedarwood. It is a deep, full-bodied, beautiful example of this dramatic, ostentatious vintage. The fruit is ripe, the tannins are sweet, and the wine is long and heady. Drink it over the next 12-15 years." - Robert Parker, October 2014

Tasting Notes

This small bottling Cabernet Sauvignon captures the hallmarks and pedigree of Vine Hill Ranch in its refinement, distinct black fruit aromas and power. Concentrated and structured, the 2012 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is generous in black cherry, black plum, blackberry, boysenberry, graphite and forest floor, and the full and fine-grained tannins carry through the long, persistent finish.

Vineyard Notes

Grapes were sourced exclusively from Block 6 of the Vine Hill Ranch, nestled along the hills of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at the south end of the Oakville AVA.  The Phillips family has carefully managed this alluvial benchland vineyard for two generations, which is home to some of the most expressive and concentrated Cabernet grapes in the Napa Valley.

Vintage Notes

The 2012 vintage began with exceptional, moderate weather that brought virtually no harm to the grapes all the way through fruit-set. The ideal long and mild days continued into the summer and were followed by a cooler-than-normal period at the end of September, allowing for preservation of fruit aromatics, freshness and natural acidity. 2012 will be remembered for its abundance of high-quality fruit, which deliberately ripened to full and balanced maturity thanks to the notably cool temperatures.

Winemaking Notes

Etude’s philosophy remains steadfast and this Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted with very minimal winemaking intervention.  The grapes were cold soaked for 3-5 days and an extended maceration period followed fermentation to help modify the depth and mouthfeel of the wine, and to fully extract color, flavor and aromatics.  The young wine was then racked into small French oak barrels where it aged for 22 months.
