Laniger is more protected from the cooling Petaluma Gap but still benefits from proximity to the San Pablo Bay, allowing the fog to develop early and recede late in the day.

Tasting Notes

A fresh and lively Pinot Noir with layers of earthiness, saturation, structure, and depth—all tributes of this extraordinary vineyard block. On the nose and palate, there is a lovely rusticity with dried cherry fruit, wild rose, vanilla cola, and clove spice, supported by savory notes of black pepper and lifted anise seed. A line of vibrant acidity supports the chewy, rounded tannins leading to a perfumed mouthwatering finish with tremendous depth and complexity. This is a showstopper, exhibiting the distinctive character of Pinot Noir, especially Clone 115, which gives the wine its distinctive floral and red fruit signature.

GRACE BENOIST RANCH

The Laniger Vineyard is located on an opposing bench slope adjacent to our acclaimed Deer Camp vineyard, on the western edge of Grace Benoist Ranch. Here the soils are very well drained, and thanks to the Rodgers Creek Fault line, have alluvial Langier loam. This loam is volcanic, fine and sandy and presents with a gray to brown color and medium acidity levels. Laniger is more protected from the cooling Petaluma Gap but still benefits from proximity to the San Pablo Bay and its fog patterns. The gradual slope and moderate microclimate allow for even vine growth and ideal fruit ripening

Process

The 2019 vintage

  • Winter

    The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop.

  • Spring

    Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually.

  • Summer

    Most grapes ripened at lower sugars, thanks to the extended, cool growing season, and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, fresh acidity and superb balance of the 2019 fruit.

  • Harvest

    Wildfires in October did not impact this year’s harvest as the vast majority of the grapes were already brought in, resulting in a crop size pretty much on par with previous years.

Crafted Excellence

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine were harvested at night to preserve freshness and integrity. They were placed in open-top fermenters for 3-5 days of cold maceration followed by fermentation. Punch downs were performed during the early stages of fermentation with the extraction becoming gentler as the wine became dry. A quiet, extended maceration followed, helping to enhance the richness and mouthfeel of the wine. The wine was lightly pressed into French oak barrels (25% new), where it rested for 14 months. For more than a decade Jon has fashioned Etude wines with a simple creed. Inspired winegrowing diminishes the need for a winemaker to intervene in the cellar. Whether sourcing from the estate Grace Benoist Ranch in Sonoma's Los Carneros, or vineyards like Fiddlestix and North Canyon in famed growing regions of California's Central Coast, his focus is on coaxing the very best from the vineyard. It shows in every glass of Etude.
