"Etude's 2017 Pinot Gris Grace Benoist Ranch Estate Grown is a very pretty, open-knit white with lovely textural depth and aromatic brightness. Orchard fruit and floral notes are nicely woven together. Supple and gracious, the 2017 is absolutely delicious. The warm vintage has given the Pinot Gris an extra kick of texture that is quite appealing. The Pinot Gris is often one of the highlights in this range, as it is again in 2017." - Antonio Galloni, December 2018

Winemaking

Winemaking

We harvested the Pinot Gris into small bins at night and rushed them to our winery in order to retain the freshness and purity of the fruit. After gently pressing the whole clusters, the juice for the 2017 Pinot Gris was transferred to small, 75-gallon stainless steel barrels for fermentation, and then allowed to mature undisturbed for five months sur lie (ageing on the lees), enhancing the silky texture and mouthfeel, before a very gentle bottling. The wine never touches a sliver of oak, nor does any portion undergo malolactic fermentation.

Jon Priest - Winemaker

For more than a decade Jon has fashioned Etude wines with a simple creed. Inspired winegrowing diminishes the need for a winemaker to intervene in the cellar. Whether sourcing from the estate Grace Benoist Ranch in Sonoma's Los Carneros, or vineyards like Fiddlestix and North Canyon in famed growing regions of California's Central Coast, his focus is on coaxing the very best from the vineyard. It shows in every glass of Etude.

Vintage

Vintage

Overall, 2017 proved to be a slightly smaller yielding vintage but one of exceptional quality. A brief period of warm weather occurred during Labor Day weekend which accelerated the harvest in some areas. Temperatures subsided just when we needed and the fruit was allowed to mature and ripen perfectly on the vines before harvest officially began. Overall, a quick and intense harvest, with althea fruit picked within two to three weeks, but the quality of the vintage shows great flavor intensity, perfect ripening and maturity, lovely balance and complexity.

Vineyard

This wine is crafted from grapes grown on our Estate Vineyard, Grace Benoist Ranch. Certified Alsatian clones are planted here in deep, well-drained loamy soils which are perfect for grape growing. The cooler temperatures here provide for a long and even growing season, allowing the Pinot Gris fruit to fully ripen while still preserving natural acidity. The Grace Benoist Estate vineyard is farmed to Etude's exacting standards, using environmentally sound viticultural practices. We grow, and ultimately harvest, focusing on intensity of flavor, strong varietal delineation and ideal natural balance.
